Subject: problems getting past host machine

Hi...

    I just got Trumpet winsock working, and for the most part
like it...except one thing...I can't figure out how to configure it
right.  For some reason, when I connect to my slip host, I can't get
*past* that host.

    Now, maybe I'm setting up my slip connection wrong.  The
host has two IP addresses, one that is its 'local net' one
(198.133.36.3) and one that is the sl0 (198.133.36.9).  My address
is 198.133.36.69.

    Now, the only thing I can think of that I might have screwed
up is 'gateway'...shoudl that be the .3 or .9 address?  Is there something
else that I *may* have done wrong besides that?

    I'm connecting to a BSDi machine for slip.

I'm looking for remote backup programs.  I would like to write a
(large) PC disk to a device on a remote host.  I found Luigi Rizzo's
NET_TAR program for packet drivers, but it seems to crash on the
machine I tested it on (after writing 1Mb).

Something like a Winsock implementation of rdump->rmt would be good.
W remote tar program better.  I'm looking for anything workable here.
I can't use a vanilla rsh program because the disk I'm bakcing up is
full anyway, so there's no room for intermediate files.

It would be good, wouldn't it! Having a internal modem,
if I ever get a decent computer (ie. workstation :-) then
it'll be useless unless my PC can route; of course, I don't
want to have it run just PC-route as I do need to do work on
it!

Are you sure that the host is running a pop3daemon?  Eudora will only
retrieve mail if the host supports the POP3 protocol.

Nope.  Not yet.  The only DOS based POP3 server that I am aware of
is the POP3 server written by Erik Olson that is available in some
versions of KA9Q.

Erik has been updating his code, and the most recent release supports
retrieving and sending mail using the POP3 protocol.  Sending is
accomplished by using the XTND XMIT command.

We have been using a KA9Q pop3 server for over a year, and it has
functioned without complaint.

There are ways to get routing to work even while you are using
the Trumpet Winsock.  Take a look at the following setup.

Not WinSock compatible.  However Peter Tattam has written a Windows
TraceRoute client that will work over his WinSock.  Since it uses
private socket options, it will probably not work over any others.

will be fine if you always get the same node name when you connect.  But if the
node name can change each time (as on my system - we have a 16 modem pool, with
each modem having a different IP address and node name) your only recourse seems
to be to edit the mxwin.ini file before starting mxwin.  An automatic mechanism
would be great.
